About MHS

Specialized DBT and trauma treatment rooted in experience, compassion, and personalized care

For more than 20 years, MHS has been a trusted outpatient facility, specializing in DBT and trauma treatment for adolescents and adults navigating emotional and behavioral challenges.

As an independently owned mental health organization, we believe care should feel personal, responsive, and built around the real needs of the people we serve – not driven by a large corporate system.

That independence allows us to remain relationship-focused and intentional in the way we develop programs, support clients, and care for our community.

Why independence matters

Because MHS is independently owned, we are able to create programming based on what best supports clients and families, not what fits a larger corporate model.

That means we can:

  • Develop specialized programming based on real community needs
  • Adapt and improve programs thoughtfully over time
  • Maintain smaller, supportive group environments
  • Focus on long-term clinical quality and relationships
  • Provide a more personalized treatment experience
  • Accept both private insurance and state insurance

Our leadership and clinical teams remain closely connected to the day-to-day client experience, allowing us to stay responsive and intentional in the care we provide.

For many clients and referral partners, that difference matters.

More than two decades of specialized care

Over the past 20+ years, MHS has continued to grow thoughtfully while staying grounded in the values that shaped our organization from the beginning:

  • Compassion
  • Clinical integrity
  • Specialized care
  • Accessibility
  • Respect for each individual’s experience

We are proud to support adolescents and adults throughout Minnesota.

Our leadership

Mental Health Systems is owned by Dr. Mark Carlson and Dr. Lane Pederson, two nationally and internationally recognized leaders in DBT and mental health care.

Together, Mark and Lane have spent decades helping shape specialized DBT programming, training clinicians, authoring books and resources, and supporting individuals and families navigating complex emotional and behavioral challenges.

Beyond their professional accomplishments, they believe mental health care should feel human, compassionate, and genuinely supportive.

As independently owned providers, they have built MHS around the idea that clients deserve thoughtful, specialized care delivered by clinicians who truly work together as a team.

While each client works directly with an assigned therapist and treatment team, that clinician also has access to ongoing collaboration, consultation, and support from an experienced network of DBT-trained professionals across MHS.

That collaborative approach helps ensure clients benefit not only from one clinician’s expertise, but from the collective insight and experience of a deeply connected team.
